1. What are the 2024 GMC Sierra HD Trucks?
GMC continues to build luxury full-size pickups, this time bringing a big deal of luxury to its heavy-duty lineup. The 2024 GMC Sierra HD will be headlined by a new Denali Ultimate trim, similar to last year's Sierra 1500 Ultimate light-duty truck. That means it will feature an interior bathed in beautiful leather and wood trim, kosher seats, and the latest tech features in the lineup.
The truck's many changes include an increased tow range, a new 10-speed transmission for the gasoline V8, styling and interior updates, and new tech and active safety features. Its one-off off-road oriented AT4X trim will be available later next year, and it will likely follow the lead of its light-duty counterpart, with a firmer long-travel suspension and two-speed transfer case, and include front and rear locking differentials among other trail-ready components.
2. What's Under the Hood of Sierra HD?
An updated 6.6-liter diesel V8 delivered 25% more torque and even higher revs. It makes 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque, both healthy bumps from today's 445 hp and 910 lb-ft torque ratings. GMC says these gains come from a more optimized turbocharger design, new electronic control unit (ECU) programming, and revised cylinder heads.
The stronger diesel in the off-road rims vehicle also helps improve the towing range for the 2500HD and 3500HD models, which increases to 20,000 pounds for conventional trailering. For gooseneck and fifth-wheel towing, the limits increase to 22,500 pounds for 2500HD models and 36,000 pounds for the 3500HD.
Even models with the standard V8 gas engine get a boost, with Double and Crew Cab models adding about 1,500 pounds of capacity. A larger grill design helps to improve airflow and cooling. However, some credit goes to the 10-speed automatic Allison transmission that now comes standard with the gas V8, replacing the aging six-speed unit. The 10-speed features short steps between gears, allowing the engine to stay close to its peak power for longer.
3. The interior of the Sierra HD
The truck's new Denali Ultimate trim removes the open-pore wood accents with full-grain leather covering the seats, door panels, dash top, and every touchable surface, giving a cosseting and comfortable ride. The headliner, visors, and windshield pillars will come wrapped in microsuede, while front passengers will be pampered with 16-way power-adjustable, massaging front seats. A sunroof, digital rearview mirror, 15-inch color head-up display, and Kicker audio system will also be modern and standard, while a 12-speaker Bose system will be optional.
4. 2024 GMC Sierra HD's Technology
They are equipped with Sierra HD's advanced tow ratings trailering safety and convenience features. Drivers will now be able to use features like adaptive cruise control when towing a trailer, with the system able to compensate for extra drag and longer braking distances. Blind spot monitoring is also extended to areas around the trailer, and its new sensors will help tell if the weight of the vehicle and trailer exceeds the truck's gross combined weight rating.
Anyone who has had a problem knows that local awareness is very important. With this goal in mind, the Sierra HD offers up to 14 camera views. Transparent Trailer View uses the cameras behind the truck and trailer to effectively make the trailer disappear from the screen display. It Provides a better real-time perspective of the objects around the truck and trailer. In the 2024 Sierra HD, this feature has been upgraded to work with the gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers.
Other helpful views include a close-up of the hitch receiver, a view of the cargo bed, and a full-length side view when trying to change lanes with a trailer. What can manipulate these angles via an optional 13.4-inch touchscreen display that offers the split-screen capability and anchors an infotainment system? Other features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto smartphone connectivity, and Google feature integration. A 12.3-inch digital gauge display will also be available.
